The joint venture between Old School Theatre and the Spring Station Women’s Club will benefit not only the two hosting organizations, but largely the Hope House location in Columbia, TN. The statistics on domestic and sexual violence are staggering and this is sadly a much needed resource in our area. The Hope House mission is “to provide shelter, advocacy and support to our clients. To engage in community education; to heighten public awareness of issues concerning domestic and sexual violence; to change societal attitudes and institutions which promote and condone violence; and to build and maintain a strong organization to deal with the problems of domestic and sexual violence.”

Join us for two special performances as we band together to make a difference in middle Tennessee by supporting this great organization. There will be suggestions for product donations made available in addition to the monetary support this event will provide. Please check them out here for more information.

The script is selected, the cast is set (see below) and it’s on. Old School Theatre is joining forces with the Spring Station Women’s Club, a member of the national General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The event will be a fund raiser to also benefit Hope House in Columbia. You can see what they’re all about here. The performance dates are June 22 and 23, so be prepared to make plans early, as we will need to know you’re coming so we can guarantee your meal. The ticket order deadline is June 8th. We will be posting the menu before long. You should also be prepared to be pulled into the action. You’ve never seen a show quite like this at Old School Theatre! There might even be some silent auction items and other ways to support Hope House. They’re a great organization and, unfortunately, a much needed resource. Domestic abuse statistics are staggering, so we are thrilled to be able to join forces and support this great organization.

The cast of the production is announced!

Starting this season, our monthly meetings have been operated as workshops on various aspects of theater operations. In April we will focus on putting on a murder myster/dinner theatre. It is timely because we are working on a joint venture in the form of a fund-raiser with the Spring Station Women’s Club, so we will also have places for you to plug yourself into that event. Join us as we explore the many things involved in creating this event and let you in the backdoor to see the whole process! Workshop takes place April 10 at 6:30.

In May we will host a directing workshop. Next season’s lineup will include a set of one act plays, so if you’ve ever thought you want to direct then this is a great way to get your feet wet without putting on a full-blown production. Come see what it’s all about and learn what it takes to pull together a great production. Workshop takes place May 8 at 6:30.

Remember that membership with Old School Theatre is based on participation, not on membership dues, so all you have to do to become a member (and get discounts on things) is to show up and play with us in the place you fit best! See you there!

Our next production is coming up quickly. Auditions for the murder mystery dinner theatre will take place on April 14 at the old high school from 10 AM until noon. Anyone 18 and over is welcome to audition due to the script requirements. We will be reading from scripts, so there is no need to prepare anything. You will be expected to interact with audience members even then, so be ready to play it up! This show has a variety of character types, along with surprising plot twists, so be prepared for anything!

Cast of Characters:

Phillip – young, handsome, well spoken…. Not really very bright – claims to be Ben Fullman’s son

Roger – Sharp, arrogant, mean spirited – Ben’s long time assistant

Rachel – attractive, young, genuine; Rachel is young, earnest, and good looking, like a Midwestern Barbie doll without makeup– claims to be Ben Fullman’s daughter

Victoria – sexy, demonstrative, naughty; she is tall, sassy, sultry, sexy, naughty but not vulgar, teases playfully but not offensively. She is dressed for a cocktail party and carries a martini glass. She has had several drinks already. She loves three things. Men, more men, and men who give her alcohol.) – claims to be Ben Fullman’s wife

Margaret – British, cool, assertive, wealthy; she is dressed elegantly. She sports a crisp British accent. She is cold, aloof, condescending, sharp witted, feline, but attractive. – claims to be Ben Fullmans’ wife

Dawn – airy, hippie, love child; she is a warm, out-going, eccentric, free spirit. She can be, at times, quiet and thoughtful; other times, honestly outrageous. She looks, talks, and dresses like she lives in the late 1960’s. She is a true hippy in mind and thought and is much more concerned with the color of the cosmos than the color of her shoes and lipstick. She talks much more effectively than she listens.) – claims to be Ben Fullman’s wife

Samantha – Sheriff, Western accent, belongs in a B movie western.

Deits – Sheriff’s timid female assistant, timid, shy, but wants to succeed; a bit uncertain and sometimes inappropriately forceful.

JJ – Sheriff’s second assistant, male, punk rocker or goth, purple or red hair, extreme, but with a sensitive side

Ben Fullman – elegant, mid-forties, businessman

Rex – Ben’s lawyer

We closed THE MUSIC MAN to a sold out, standing-room-only crowd and actually had to turn people away. Not only could we not have pulled off a show with such a large cast and incredible choreography without guidance, we couldn’t have done it without YOU, the audience. Each of our performances had such fantastic and full crowds, you helped us break records. Special thanks to our artistic team: Laura Holderman, director; Doug Smith, musical director; Chelsea Howell, choreographer; Kelly Grounds, assistant director, stage manager, no-sew costumer, champion of last-minute disaster help; Fred Kissell, accompanist extraordinaire from auditions to closing night. Doug Bishop worked magic once again with our limited lighting and learning where circuits were and knowing how much we could load them. Mark Pelletier was not only in the cast learning tough quartet music, he and Doug spearheaded the set build process.

The cast most certainly deserves a thundering round of applause as well. We had lots of new faces- something we love to see happen- and we had lots of family groups participating. Who’d have thought that in little Spring Hill, TN, we’d have SIX families involved that have twins or triplets? We had cast members from all over the age ranges and it was great! They worked hard, played hard, many of our men showed up and helped with the set building process, lots of women and teens showed up and helped paint set pieces. And how about those periaktos? Did you know that’s what they were called? Our 6 large, moving set peices that created the scenes on the stage. Those books took a while and I have to brag on those ladies and teens who lovingly painted them on a few separate days.

And another round of applause- standing ovation, really- for the wonderful orchestra Doug Smith put together. They practiced around us for weeks and then joined us to work the show together in the final weeks of rehearsal. What a great bunch of musicians! We were so grateful to them for their time and energy that allowed us to keep the whole show live instead of recorded. It’s just not the same with cd tracks for a show like this one.

Community theater at Old School Theatre really means community. It takes all of us to make it work! Not just the artistic team with the vision to pull it together, not just the actors on stage learning lines and songs and becoming a new character, not just the behind-the-scenes folks doing the technical work, not just the folks in the front of the house running ticket sales and concessions, and not just you, the audience. We all come together in the theater to escape the daily grind and find joy in participating or watching a production come to life. This one takes the cake, no doubt. It wore us out, kept us up, pushed our limits and broadened our horizons. Where else can you get such an experience as this beside theater? Do join us again next time. Take to the stage, work in the box office, build the set, whatever you want to try next. Or even continue to join the audience because can’t do it, and it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun, without the fantastic audiences who come to enjoy our labors of love.

See you next time!

Contact us online or by phone to get a TeamMate card for their Home Team Advantage program- they’re free! You just hand it to your server when you order and they scan it with your ticket. 10% of your pretax purchase comes back to Old School Theatre. This program is good until the end of 2012. The cards are free to you and come with two key tags you can give to your friends.

You can bet you’ll see quite a few of your theater friends around there as we eat there to show our appreciation for their support of us. Get a card, show it and eat and you’re supporting us. No outside cost to you, just a great meal!

I know some of you out there frequent the place. I love the trivia games and get a kick out of checking my rank against national standings- and beating the guy who’s ALWAYS on the leaderboard. Invest in the futures of both businesses and in the community environment of Spring Hill by joining us there on these days or grab a card and use it every time you go. See you at “BDubs” soon!
